Today I will be doing my final exam which will consist of comparing and contrasting questions I answered recently and about 6 months back (They are the same questions). 1. What is art? My answer has stayed the same from the beginning of the semester to the end of it. I believe art is a form of self-expression. You can express yourself through drawing, sculpting, painting, computer arts, or even music. There is always a message that the artist is trying to send through their art, especially in music. Recently, I was inspired by a piece of Japanese art in the art museum. I wanted to create a painting of a night in a Japanese park. I love cherry blossom trees and was determined to complete this art. 2. List some reasons that an artist would need to use observation when making artwork. At the beginning of the semester, I said that an artist would need to observe when making artwork so that he/she can make the art more detailed and to be inspired. Recently I stated the same thing just in different words. I still think that those are the reasons an artist would need to observe. That is what I have found in my experiences. I was inspired to created Bruce Lee out of circles after observing a picture of the Mad Hatter made of circles on Google Images. 3. Is copying always plagiarism or is there a gray area? Explain your thoughts. I have always believed that there is a gray area in copying. That gray area is where an artist takes inspiration from one piece of art and uses similar elements from the original and his/her own elements to create something brand new. During the Artists Steal unit, I decided to make a parody of the Obama "Hope" Election poster by spray painting Naruto in place of Obama and replacing "Hope" with "Believe It!". This is an original piece of art due to me taking inspiration from one piece of art and creating something brand new. If you do some research, you will find that a lot of well known paintings or other works of art copied other works of art by taking inspiration. 4. What kinds of problems might artists encounter as they plan, make and share art? List as many as you can.
At the beginning of the semester I said that some problems artists may encounter could be not enough time and the work of art did not turn out how he/she wanted it to. Recently, I said that some examples of problems that artists encounter could be sizing issues, moving it around, second thoughts, people do not like the art, and the art not turning out the way they want it to. My recent thoughts are similar to mine from the beginning of the semester. At the beginning, I was more broad with my thoughts and didn't elaborate. This time, I expanded more on my thoughts based upon experience. During my Artists Observe project, I experienced some problems with the portrait I was creating. I was having trouble drawing the teeth and getting the portrait to show some color in the face since it was black and white. I eventually overcame these problems and ended up being really happy with the outcome.
